Do You Need Medication to Cure Anxiety?

The American Journal of Public Health just reported that more Americans than ever are overdosing on anxiety medications.

The quantity of prescriptions filled between 1996 and 2013 tripled. That should be concerning enough. But the number of overdoses quadrupled!

There’s one medication that’s particularly problematic. More than 5% of U.S. adults fill a prescription for benzodiazepine each year, often for anxiety. Benzodiazepine is highly addictive. In 2013, nearly one-third of the 23,000 people who died from prescription drug overdoses were on benzodiazepine.

I’m often accused of being anti-medication. It’s not true. Drugs have their place, and are appropriate in some cases.

But increasingly we expect to pop a pill to solve our problems. It’s consistent with our quick-fix society and our intolerance for discomfort. This, however, is a highly problematic trend, for a few reasons.

First, as noted above, drugs pose risks. There are side effects and a certain percentage of people end up overdosing. No one should take drugs unless it’s necessary.

And that leads me to the second reason—very often drugs are not necessary. There are other solutions, other ways to manage anxiety and panic. These other methods require time, effort, and wisdom, but they work just as well, if not better. And from a well-being perspective, they’re preferable.

Third, drugs sometimes mask the symptoms, but leave a fundamental problem unresolved. If you struggle with anxiety and/or panic, it’s important to learn how to reduce your anxiety level. Don’t just cover it up with a pill.

Basically, most people’s anxiety and/or panic can be effectively managed using simple techniques, life skills that reduce anxiety levels. In most cases if you apply these techniques you’ll see results in under 30 days. And the best part is you don’t have to worry about overdosing. As far as I know, no one every overdosed on Dr. Dan.
