Do you think 20 moves ahead?

Strategies for Reducing Anxiety & Panic

I heard a funny story about an old man standing on a crowded bus. A young man standing next to him asked, “What time is it?”

The old man refused to reply. And the young man moved on.

The old man’s friend, sensing something was wrong, asked, “Why were you so rude to that young fellow?”

The old man answered, “”If I gave him the time of day, next he’d want to know where I was going.  Then we might make some small talk and find we have some common interests.  If we did that, he might invite himself to my house for dinner.  If he did, he would meet my daughter.  If he met her, they would fall in love.  I don’t want my daughter marrying someone who can’t even afford a watch.”

Do you think 20 moves ahead? Does this kind of thinking mean you never get started?

People who struggle with anxiety have a very hard time taking risks. I’m not talking here about bungee jumping or high stakes venture capital; I’m talking about reasonable risks, the kind of simple risks that enable a person to start a relationship, a new job, or a project.

If you’re so good at calculating a route to failure, you’ll never do anything. But maybe there’s a route to success too. Maybe the route to success passes through failure.

Many times I’m driving to a destination, not paying attention to my GPS, and I make a wrong turn. You know what’s next, right? “Recalculating.” I love that. You can make a mistake, but there’s always a new path to success.

Do you obsess over decisions? There’s a fine line between being deliberate and being obsessive. The cost of the latter is constant second-guessing that leads to inertia and anxiety.

For over two decades, I’ve helped people learn to make faster, better, and more productive decisions that have moved their life forward and relieved them of crushing anxiety.
