How to Take Charge of Your Anxiety

Let’s start today with a great story…

A man comes to town and asks the mayor, “I’m thinking about moving here. What kinds of place is this?”

The mayor responds, “What kind of place do you come from?”

The man answers, “Where I’m from it’s scary, dreary, depressing, and the people can’t be trusted.”

“This place is pretty much the same,” said the mayor.

Then another man came to the same town and asked the mayor the same question, “I’m thinking about moving here. What kind of place is this?”

The mayor responds, “What kind of place do you come from?”

The man answers, “Where I’m from it’s charming, bright, cheery, and the people are kind.”

“This place is pretty much the same,” said the mayor.

Situations are not as they are, they are as YOU are.

What do you get when you smile at someone? You get a smile back. And if you stare at someone? You get a stare back.

We’re NOT an objective observer of life; we’re a subjective influence. In other words, our presence changes everything.

Let me give you a simple example. Let’s say you wanted to measure the temperature in a small room. So you bring a thermometer into the room and wait for a reading. But since your body temperature is 98.6 degrees, the fact that you’re in the room changes the reading you get. As long as you’re there, things are different.

So the question is…why is your life being limited by anxiety? Why are you scared of this or avoiding that? You might be able to offer a lot of explanations, but none as compelling as the fact that YOU have not yet learned how to respond to your anxiety.

Oh, I know there are circumstances contributing to your situation. I’m not saying that your anxiety and its consequences are all your fault. But it is all your responsibility.

If you change, your situation will change.

If you learn how to respond to your anxiety, you can free yourself from it.

No matter what happened that triggered your anxiety or panic, YOU are keeping it alive. I know that’s hard to hear. It’s a bitter pill to swallow. But once you swallow it, you’ll transform yourself from a helpless victim to an empowered change agent for your life.

Don’t just sit there cowering in dread of your situation while you wait for
something or someone to suddenly change or for God to perform a miracle. If you want your situation to change, then change it! Do YOUR part. Because if YOU change, then your life will change and anxiety will lose its power over you.

Now there is one more important point. You might be thinking, “Dr. Dan, I have changed, but my situation has not.”

Change itself is not quite good enough. You have to make the RIGHT changes. Like a scientist, you have to know EXACTLY what changes to make to get the outcome you’re looking for.
