It’s Time for Things to Change

Today I want to begin by quoting a parenting guide. Stay with me as I tie this into anxiety and panic for you.

In his 1928 best-selling parenting guide, Psychological Care of Infant and Child, John Watson writes…

“Never hug and kiss them. Never let them sit on your lap. If you must, kiss them once on the forehead when they say good night. Shake hands with them in the morning. Give them a pat on the head if they made an extraordinary good job of a difficult task.”

Does that sound like good parenting advice to you?

Of course not!

I doubt there’s a mom, a dad, or a mental health professional on Earth today who would concur with Watson’s advice.

And yet, many decades ago, Watson was a best-selling author, Chair of psychology at Johns Hopkins University, and a Gold Medal recipient from the American Psychological Association.

My point is simple, and it’s true in many instances: what is commonly accepted as sound advice one day can become absurd later.

Today, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States. The vast majority of people suffering from anxiety and panic are treated with drugs and/or therapy. It’s standard practice—commonly accepted as sound advice.

But in many instances, it’s not working. In addition, it can be time consuming, expensive, and, in the case of medications, there are often side-effects.

And that’s the downside for people who seek help. There are also millions of people who don’t seek help because they know the standard treatment is drugs and/or therapy.

I believe that one day, many years from now, we’ll look back on this era and view the years people spent in therapy and the millions of dollars spent on drugs as absurd.

The fact is, that for most people, overcoming anxiety and panic is not that complicated. You don’t have to analyze your family of origin. And it’s not a matter of getting your body chemistry right. There are simple, straightforward, easy-to-implement self-help interventions that can bring you relief, usually within 30 days.

I use these interventions in my own struggle with anxiety, and they work. Ragdoll, PMR, 3PO, Powerhack, HTT, Thought-Labeling, and Preloading are just some of the interventions that have changed my life and given me control over my anxiety. These are also a few of the techniques I teach in Dr. Dan’s Anxiety Plan.
