The Law of the Harvest

And Why it Matters for Anxiety & Panic

I’d like to share with you one of the keys to overcoming anxiety.

When someone gets it in their head that they need relief from anxiety and panic, they go crazy trying to find the right medication, therapist, or alternative solution.

Many people go online and search for THE answer. (That’s probably how you found me.) But finding a path to calm and peace is NOT like finding a solution to your home financing problem. You can’t just click, buy, and get instant gratification.

Today people are into quick fixes. But you can’t “microwave” this. Learning the skills to help you overcome anxiety requires you to adhere to the law of the harvest.

What do I mean by that?

You know how a harvest works, don’t you? In the spring time you have to plant. Then you have to water, fertilize, and irrigate all summer long. There’s something else you have to do too…wait! You have to be patient. And then, after you complete every step of the process, you can harvest the crop.

We’re not used to revering a process. Most people look for short-cuts. Today everything is about efficiency. Efficiency works with machines, business, and finances. But efficiency will NOT work in the case of your anxiety.

Last summer I had a private phone session with a middle-aged woman who started by asking how long it would take for me to cure her of anxiety. She had her first panic anxiety in 8th grade. Since then she developed a plethora of avoiding tactics, which only made her anxiety worse. My answer: “It took you years to get into this mess. Give it at least 30 days to get out of it.”

Overcoming anxiety takes TIME. There are no short-cuts! You have to respect the process and be willing to take every step.

Can you imagine goofing-off all spring and summer and then trying to harvest a crop in the fall? It’s impossible!

Overcoming anxiety is like farming. If you skip a step or don’t adhere to the process, you’ll short-circuit the process and slow yourself down. But if you go step-by-step…that’s the fastest way. In the words of Stephen Covey, “Slow is fast and fast is slow.”

For years I taught highs school students. I always knew who crammed the night before a test. Their command of the material was never up to par. Real learning, real emotional progress, requires a step-by-step process that allows the brain to adapt and assimilate new information.

This is a little embarrassing, but the truth is that it took me while to accept this during my own process of overcoming anxiety. But once I “got it,” I started to see the fruits of my efforts.

I admit that Dr. Dan’s Anxiety Plan is not a quick fix. Even though I’m sure I lose people when I say this, I’m proud of the fact that Dr. Dan’s Anxiety Plan is a thorough step-by-step process. It takes time and effort, but it works.
