What are You NOT Scared of?

And Why that's an Important Question

Clients tell me all the time that they’re scared. People suffering from anxiety see the world as a frightening place. I can relate. Can you?

On a Q&A teleconference, I asked a woman in Dr. Dan’s Anxiety Plan, “What are you scared of?”

She responded, “Dr. Dan, the question is…what am I not scared of?!”

In her mind, she was scared of everything.

But I knew that wasn’t true. And I knew it would help her to answer her own question…What are you not scared of? I asked her to name me one thing.

There was silence. No response.

“Are you scared the Earth will be struck by a meteor near Pluto?” I asked.

“No,” she responded.

“Are you scared you’ll slip and drown in a pool two thousand miles away?” I asked.

“No,” she said.

“Are you scared of the tigers in China?” I asked.

“No,” she said again.

“Are you scared to talk to your sister?” I asked.

“No,” she said again.

“Do you think I could name 1000 more things that don’t scare you?” I asked.

“You probably could,” she said.

I don’t mean to minimize the things that scare you. I’m sure there are many. But there are also many things, probably many more things, that don’t scare you. And it’s helpful to be aware of them.

Why?

The more you fear, and the more you focus on your fears, the more you feel trapped. You feel like you can’t escape your fears. They envelop you. Your life becomes highly restrictive, in thought and in action.

But if I were to ask you to make a list of all the things you’re not afraid of, all these doors would open for you. You could go there. You could do this. You could talk to that person. The trap loosens. Life begins to include possibility, both in thought and in action.

You might even decide to explore some of those possibilities, walk through some of those doors, and enter new areas of life free of anxiety.

Here’s your new “to do.” Make a list of things that don’t scare you. Every day, add one thing to the list.

Every day you add to your not scared list, you’ll be reminded that you don’t fear everything. In addition, you’ll free yourself, at least partially, from an anxiety encompassing life.

This is not a complete solution, but it’s a step in the right direction. It’s small simple daily “to do” that will help you overcome anxiety and panic.
