When will You be Free from Anxiety?

Will you ever be free from anxiety and fear? And if so, when?

Believe it or not, I can answer those questions with near certainty.

In order to predict whether or not you’ll continue to suffer with anxiety, we have to identify the most important factor that brings on anxiety.

What do you think? If you had to pick ONE THING that best predicts the onset of anxiety and panic, what would you say?

Research shows that the number one predictor of continued anxiety and panic is the habitual AVOIDANCE of whatever it is that you fear.

Ironic, isn’t it?

You thought that avoiding it was saving you from anxiety.

Nope.

Avoiding it brings on anxiety. Because avoidance is a low-grade affirming of the fear.

In one of my 1-on-1 coaching sessions, I worked with a woman who wouldn’t leave her house. She explained that the last time she left her house she had a horrific panic attack. She wanted to avoid that happening again. But each time she faced leaving he house, and avoided it, she experienced not a panic attack but low-grade anxiety. In her mind, trading low-grade anxiety for a full fledged panic attack was reasonable. But this trade was costing her quality of life. She was trapped by her own walls, losing the battle against her fears.

I understand that if you experienced a panic attack, your inclination is to avoid whatever brought it on. You try to insulate yourself, protect yourself from that venom. But in reality, there’s nothing worse for anxiety than avoidance. And the more you avoid the more power and control you give to the thing you’re avoiding.

I can hear you now, “But Dr. Lerner, xyz scares me to death. How do I stop avoiding it? How can I face it?”

That’s a good question. And it’s exactly one of the skills I teach in Dr. Dan’s Anxiety Plan. It’s not a simple matter. But it’s a crucial life skill if your suffering with anxiety. And your ability to learn and employ this skill will determine whether or not you’ll continue to be trapped by your fears or free to live the life you deserve.
